Shimla – Explore The “Queen of Hills”

Shimla is the capital and largest city of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is also the headquarters of a district of the same name, surrounded by the states of Uttarakhand in the southeast, Mandi and Kullu in the north, Kinnaur in the east, Sirmaur in the south and Solan in the west. In 1864, Shimla was declared the summer capital of the British Raj in India. After independence, Shimla Nagar became the capital of the state of East Punjab and later on the formation of Himachal Pradesh, it was declared the capital of the state. Shimla is a beautiful hill station that is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Situated at an elevation of 2202 meters above sea level, this place is also known as ‘Summer Refuge’ and ‘Queen of Hills Stations‘. The present Shimla district was created in 1972.

The people of Shimla are informally called “Shimlawasi“. Various festivals are celebrated here, leading to the 3-4 days long Shimla Summer Festival, which is held every year on the ridge during the peak tourist season. There are many places to visit in Shimla. Local hangouts such as the Mall and Ridge are in the city center. Most of the city’s heritage buildings are preserved in their original ‘Todorbathan‘ architecture. Lakkad Bazar, which is situated beyond the ridge, is famous for souvenirs and crafts made of wood. On the banks of the Sutlej River, 55 kilometers from the main city, there are hot sulfur glasses called Tattapani, which are believed to have medicinal value. Shimla has many temples and is often here in the surrounding villages and Devotees come from cities to visit. A temple dedicated to Kali Devi is located near the mall. The Jakhu Temple dedicated to Hanuman is situated at the highest peak in Shimla. Shimla is famous for having the largest ice skating rink in India. During the winter, the ground is covered with natural snow and this is the time (December to January) when skating is thoroughly enjoyed. Tracking is also very popular here.

Art and craft products manufactured in Shimla are in high demand among tourists. Many things are made here, from exquisite jewelry, embroidered shawls, and clothing to leather items and sculptures. Pine and cedar trees are also found in abundance around Shimla. The wood of these trees is used extensively in all major buildings of Shimla. A variety of crafts of wood made in Shimla include small boxes, utensils, image carvings, and souvenirs. The carpets of Shimla(Queen of hills) are also a major attraction for tourists. Various floral and other motifs are used in their manufacture. Wool is used to make blankets and carpets. Apart from this, handkerchiefs, hand fans, gloves, and caps are also famous here.

Vistadome Train (Him Darshan) For Shimla to Kalka

The Indian Railways has recently unveiled the Himachal Darshan Express, which runs between Kalka to Shimla(Queen of hills). The roof of this train, which started on 25 December 2019, is covered with glass, from which passengers can take a special view of the Shimla plaintiffs from the moving train on the mountain. All coaches on this train are First Class Air Conditioned VistaDome. These are coaches that have glass on their roof and also have wide-open windows next to the seat and have glass on them. When this glass-roofed train passes through the plains, you will not only be able to sit on the train and see the view of the blue sky above.

The train has a total of 7 coaches, including 6 AC first class Vistaadom coaches and one AC first-class coach. Each Vistadome coach can carry up to 15 passengers simultaneously, while the first-class coach has a capacity of 14 passengers. The Vistadome coach of Himdarshan Express will have 5-5 seats towards the window, while the remaining 5 seats will be in the middle.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit in the summer. when daytime temperatures are pleasant and outdoor adventures are plentiful. The best season to visit Shimla for snow is the winter season, which is between October to March.

How To Reach

Shimla is well connected by air, rail, and road, the main mode of transport. The Jubarhati airport is the nearest airbase to this location. There are many flights to this airbase from Indira Gandhi International Airport. Tourists can also reach their respective destinations from Kalka railway station.
